Why did we develop a smart bike path – and what is the impact?

We helped Egedal Municipality bring a playful and rather unusual bike path to life. Here’s why.

Glowing animals adorn a special cycle path in Egedal Municipality that we helped develop. Here, you can learn why and how the luminous animals found their way to the cycle path.

Why?

Egedal Municipality wanted more children to use the scenic cycle path instead of cycling along a busy road between Veksø and Lærkeskolen in Steløse.

The project needed to make the path safer for schoolchildren, as the path would primarily be used by them. At the same time, the Smart Cycle Path had to make the journey more fun for the children.

Therefore, we held workshops with the children to find the right theme for the cycle path – and the Zoo theme was chosen.

The solution was a series of luminous animals that are activated via an RFID tag on the children’s helmets when the children cycle past.

Impact:

Without any apps or corny gamification initiatives, the nine luminous animal sculptures have helped us create an interactive experience that has undoubtedly made cycling the path more attractive.

We don’t have concrete data on usage before and after, but when people realise that we developed the bike path, they are always pleasantly surprised and often ask the follow-up question: Why haven’t more paths like this been built?

It was probably one of those inventions that we could have made a bigger sales effort and scaled up for the benefit of everything. It didn’t work out that way at first – but it’s never too late if someone wants a smart cycle path?
