A system for germination and a new planting machine will re-establish eelgrass on the seabed on a large scale. A project we are currently developing in collaboration with Blue Research with support from GUDP.
If eelgrass disappears, it has major consequences for wildlife, and eelgrass beds help stabilise the seabed, forming a kind of natural coastal defence.
Yet eelgrass is increasingly disappearing in Danish waters. We hope to change that with a new invention for planting eelgrass on a large scale in collaboration with Blue Research ApS.
We’ve already been working on the project for a while – with good results (as mentioned in the previous post here). And now we’ve just kicked off the new project “INDUGRÆS”, which will develop a commercial solution for establishing eelgrass beds on a large scale.
The goal is to find a solution to plant eelgrass efficiently. We do this by developing a system where the seeds germinate in tubes and a planting machine that can handle the developed planting tubes.
The Green Development and Demonstration Program (GUDP) under the Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Fisheries supports the project. Hopefully, we’ll be busy planting new eelgrass beds when the project is completed in August 2027.
